Learn the rules that apply everywhere
CASA’s recreational guidance includes a maximum height of 120 metres above ground level, staying at least 30 metres from other people, never flying over another person, flying one drone at a time, daylight-only operation and keeping the drone within visual line of sight. Recreational flyers must also avoid populous areas and emergency operations.
These are starting points, not a complete location approval. Airport and helicopter-site rules depend on factors including aircraft weight, distance and crewed aircraft activity. Read the current CASA page for the exact requirements.
Check the place immediately before flying
CASA recommends using a CASA-verified drone-safety app to find where you can and cannot fly. Check again at the location and stay alert for changing conditions and crewed aircraft. If crewed aircraft are nearby, follow the current rule to move away and land safely where required.
Commercial flying has additional requirements. CASA states that drones flown for work must be registered and the operator needs the relevant licence or accreditation.
- Stay within the current height, distance and visual-line-of-sight rules.
- Never fly over people or emergency operations.
- Check airport and helicopter-site restrictions.
- Use a CASA-verified drone-safety app.
- Check whether your flying is recreational or for work.
Common questions
Do I need a licence to fly recreationally?
CASA says recreational flyers generally do not need a licence or operator accreditation, but the drone safety rules still apply and different requirements apply to work operations.
Does a sub-250 g drone avoid every rule?
No. Weight changes some requirements, but core safety rules and location restrictions still matter. Check current CASA guidance for your exact situation.
